Well, it’s almost time to pack; –Monday a few dozen of my students and I will embark on a 2 day trip to Nashville to tour some studios and the Hall of Fame, attend a music showcase, and visit with the BMI and NARAS people. And stare at the statue of naked people on Music Row.
When Nashville went looking for a statue that symbolized their rich musical heritage, apparently the majority agreed that a bunch of naked dancing people summed it all up. Am I the only one scratching my head about this choice? And to think that they placed it in the center of a traffic roundabout (whose bright idea was this?)…I guess it’s there to slow down the traffic.
Here’s a few more places on the itinerary:
RCA Studio B – “Home of a Thousand Hits”
Oceanway Studio, another famous space created from an old church:
and Kristen Cothron’s industry showcase concert at the Rutledge.

She’s hoping the right people come and hear her show and “make her a big star.” Of course, not all musicians think that Nashville is on their side. In 1998, a very angry singer placed this ad in Billboard magazine to let the Nashville industry people know just how much he appreciated their support. Geez, Johnny, I didn’t know ya had it in ya!
So that’s the week to come; hope I can squeeze in a post or two before the bus leaves.
Peace, Ya’ll…
J

Well, good luck with this J. Nashville is an adult dose. As for the naked people, it makes perfect sense when in the context of the earlier Hunter S. quote.
My question is; Who had the bright idea of throwing a traffic circle in the mix? I mean, I think it’s pretty obvious to everyone that I’m from out of town already. Being seen running 6 consecutive laps around that damn thing doesn’t help matters at all.
You know, I got no beef Music City in general. I’ve always been shown great hospitality and kindness whenever I was attempting to take a crop to market. They have a way of rejecting you that leaves you feeling kind of good about the whole thing.
That being said, I got to side with J.C. on that one. Shame on them for forsaking the guy and thanks to R.R. for having some vision.

Good points; I guess they used the same city planner that decided they only needed one bridge to cross the river downtown. I still like Nashville, too. It’s got a healthy amount of people who know what hard work is and don’t trust people who expect something for nothing. Sound’s like the makings of a J. Cash song already (’cept I’d be pretty scared if he showed up to sing it)!

Most people I know who live in Nashville agree…we don’t get the statue either. I imagine there is some grand plan behind it, but it’s lost on me. I hope you and your students enjoy your trip to Nashville.
I’ve never seen that Johnny Cash ad. Hilarious!

Thank you, Josh…and glad I could share the ad; –it took a bit of searching because it’s been about 10 years since it appeared. I remember the guys in the repair shop taped the page up on their wall o’ fun. Good times!
