So the Iron Chefs at Digidesign have been cooking up a new virtual instrument plugin and this one’s gotta be designed either for phlebotomists or the Trance Loop/Electronica crowd.  Judging from the samples, you beatmakers out there should be well pleased.  I was severely disappointed in the example of an Acoustic Piano sound, but impressed at the ultra-modern beats with extra-wide spatial imaging on everything else they listed.  Yea, I’m a plug-in junkie and I’ll be downloading this.  It will probably be just like the Eleven Plugin;  –I’ll fall in love with it and when it expires it will be about $300 more than I think it’s worth.  Heck, I could probably find a real acoustic piano (used) for that…but why expect killer piano sounds from a plugin called “Transfuser.”  But enough of my sardonic wit,  go check it out for yourself

One more thing, be sure to ignore any “Transfuser” criticism you might hear from Christian Science or Jehovah’s Witness-affiliated websites.

From Audiogeekzine comes a wonderful video tip;  how to archive your protools sessions!

Happy Archiving!

Found this on Youtube-  Dweezil demonstrating Native Instruments’ Guitar Rig software.

Any guitar sound that you like can be created, stored and emailed to your friends using your computer, not your amp. Guitar Rig is a plugin for popular sequencers/recording software.

It’s kinda cool to hear Dweezil play Van Halen then one of his dad’s old solos.  His 2nd tour (Zappa plays Zappa) is coming to play a concert in Atlanta in a few months…I wonder if the wife would go.   Hmmm…. Read the rest of this entry »

For those of you who might not know, the film is a camera following me around over the course of a year, in and out of recording studios documenting once and for all the way it really happens. We start in Toronto and end in Morocco.
The film will be showing in select cities and the dvd will be available soon.

Good Musician shares tips on how to get young children interested in playing an instrument.

I’m not originally an Erykah Badu fan, but after seeing her on Before the Music Dies (a great video!!), I had to catch this review of her new music video on Killed by the Video Star’s site.  As I watched it, my grins turned to guffaws…she’s probably one of the most intelligent artists out there today!  I won’t give away the cool stuff, but it’s a real trip down memory lane in the spirit of RHCP’s Dani California vid.

This is a cool video tip I found at http://www.recordbetteraudio.com/ :

The clinician is Terry Howard (3 time grammy award winner).

Earfarm posted this vocal outtake here of David Lee Roth singing “Running with the Devil” .  It’s pretty amusing without the music!

Undiscovered footage of Phil Collins recording the drum track for “In the Air Tonight”  (flash required)?  No it’s a commercial, silly.

I’m not a sports fan, and I really rolled my eyes when I discovered that Chunklet had this country ditty labled as “Worst Song” here;  Being an Auburn grad. myself, I’d quickly add that this doesn’t seem to be an officially produced song about Auburn University(at least I sure hope it’s not!!).

This month’s tech tip from Musician’s Friend is really appropriate, even if you’re not ready to head to rehab:  –Craig Anderton gives us a great sequence that really boils everything down into the steps we should be doing.   A great read.

mood orbs?

These light+loudspeaker combos are really aesthetically appealing, but they’re probably not suited for the average nightclub environment.  Imagine the fireworks when you add a few of these to a room full of drunks and a few pitchers of beer spilled on the floor…. (credits to emusician Xtra).

Hear 2.0 reminds us of the cyclical nature of the music industry. (ad-supported music).

Media futurist predicts a songwriter’s strike due to the failings of the Performing Rights Organizations (PROs).  I believe there’s a good chance he’s right about this; –the industry and the courts still haven’t gotten a good handle on a digital world without borders.

A lot of bloggers are pointing to the end of the record labels.  I read with interest the post about “Digital is more than just the Internet“  from New Music Strategies.  The point is well taken;  –the industry was not prepared for the wide open spaces and changing formats/distribution methods.  Change takes time and the folks who made a living off the status quo were slow to see the handwriting on the wall.  But don’t rule them out yet.

Seth Godin published some new music lessons for the industry to think about. (hypebot, our digital music).

The Digital Rights Management experiment apparently failed, so the labels will have to come up with something new(our digital music).   My bet=look out for  digital watermarks that track the tracks (Listenerd).

The RIAA is probably not dead. (Mashable via Listenerd).  I know my job continues to change incrementally.  The same can be said for the industry, even though change can be painfully slow (and those who do not change are condemned to fade away).

Finally, we’re all here for a purpose.  Look at Louis’s post and contemplate the future.  What changes do you need to make?

For you plugin-heads;  a free Vintage meter! (RTAS, VST & Direct X).  (thanks to the Womb board).  Plus a list of more FREE RTAS plugs!

Happy Sunday!

My buddy Stan and Rollin’ in the Hay will be in town at the Double Branch Saloon on Friday Jan. 11. at 10 pm.

As we move closer to the end of the year and take a breather from all the holiday bustle, I’d just like to take a moment and say thank you for coming here and reading my teaching blog.  This has been an open diary and forum to reflect on what’s happening;  –mainly in the music industry side of things.  I’ve pondered opening a music theory “House of Pancakes” blog to deal with the first year theory curriculum (the most important of all things!)….but I barely have time during the day to reflect upon the music industry side.  I would encourage my colleagues to try this education blogging;  –it opens lines of communication and expands my classroom and my thinking.  That can be a really good thing when you’re a stuffy old college professor who’s over twice the age of his students.  Some old geezer who wears a tie most days and needs to clean up his office;  –that’s me.

In other news, I recorded with the Digidesign tape saturation plugin.   I stuck it on a master fader track and would have to say that my first impression is that I like it, but I need more time to really figure out what it can do.  It’s an expensive plug-in but Santa was pretty good this year.

Posting has been and will continue to be light this week as I’ve been doing a lot of traveling and holiday chores w/ family.

And thanks again for reading.  I really appreciate it!

If you’d like to read a post about gratitude with grace, I’d recommend Louis Schmier’s holiday post.

Peace.

Got 43 minutes? Artistshousemusic.org has posted a great video interview of Chris Scarabosio, Skywalker Sound’s lead sound designer. He talks about recording techniques, his work on films and tv series, and using Pro Tools. Actually, there are several videos by Chris on this site; a worthy visit for anyone considering sound design as a career.

I’m waiting for Charles Dye to get here (Stankonia) and just found out the class has been delayed one hour. Looks like there are seven of us and the coffee is brewing in the lounge area, so I’m off to round up a little caffeine…

There are 6 new videos about version 7.4!

Look carefully at the signal path in this picture:  do you know what is getting ‘verb?   What tracks end up with the T-Racks EQ?    An important part of learning to work within the box is the ability to visualize signal flow.   To my students;  –10 Extra Credit points added to a bad test grade if you will take the time to illustrate the signal path via a flowchart and put it in my mailbox before Nov. 9th.

This is big news  if you’ve ever wondered what that track would sound like a few BPM faster but you know that you’d never play that riff that well again.  Digi’s “Elastic Audio” algorithm is ready to hit the market in the next ProTools version! We’re talking about the power to change the tempo of any audio track in real time with NO ARTIFACTS! REALTIME!
They’ve been talking about this for “down the road” (check out Dave Lebolt’s message in the latest DIGIZINE) but my inside source says it’s really close to the street date!

The Digidesign gang was in great form as they tailored a session for MIDI production and remixing…
